Applications for funding for
research projects in two areas are being sought by the Shirley Glasstone Hughes
Trust Fund this year. Bids for the 2011 competition are invited for research
projects that explore one of two questions:

Does dentists’ fear have an adverse effect on
     clinical decision making?

Which dental liners under amalgam restorations
     have greater patient benefit?

The questions have been selected
after a review of 12 topics suggested by users of the Primary Care Dentistry
Research Forum, an online community that helps general dental practitioners to
shape the research agenda. A maximum of £200,000 of funding is available to the
successful applicant(s).

The successful projects are
expected to begin in January 2012 and should be of no more than three years’
duration. Bids are welcomed from UK-based candidates only and will be judged on
criteria including their originality, relevance to quality enhancement in
primary dental care and the involvement of dental practitioners in the
research.
The deadline for applications is 19 September. The trustees of the fund are
expected to announce which bids have been successful by the end of November.

Latest review topic winner!

Congratualtions to Pilli Naveen Kumar on submitting the latest topic with the most votes for review.

Shirley was a BDA member, a dentist and keen researcher. Her research in embryology and tooth development led to her being awarded the Howard Mummery prize, which was considered the Nobel Prize for dentistry at the time. Shirley was the first scientist ever to grow living teeth in a testube, so it's no surprise that she was described as 'ahead of her time' back in 1939!

When Shirley died in 1990, she very generously left a legacy with the BDA to set up a Trust Fund that would provide scholarships or prizes for dental research. Since 1991 the Trust has funded 42 projects worth in excess of £700,000 that have helped further knowledge in the field of dentistry.

By submitting a topic or applying for funding you could be carving out a legacy to match this formidable woman! So get involved today!

Water is our lifeline that bathes us and feeds us. Can we minimize useage of water? Can we avoid using plastic in our practice? Are there any alternatives? With the advent of newer tooth bonded restorative materials and various bonding agents and adhesive systems, the use of amalgam as a restorative material has decreased drastically. So chances of mercury contamination have slimmed down. Similarly, can we avoid the use of plastics? Are there any means to use water conservatively or any alternatives to water usage in our field?

As submitted by Pilli Sai Naveen Kumar of Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, India.

The topic will now undergo a State of Art review by our research team, the results of which will be published in the British Dental Journal and this site in due course.

A grant of more than £88,000 has been awarded to a study
that will investigate the effect of social deprivation on oral health in outer
north-east London. The project, which beat off competition from eleven other
proposals to secure funding from the Shirley Glasstone Hughes Trust Fund, will
investigate whether people living in deprived communities define oral health
differently from their peers living in less deprived areas. It will also assess
whether individuals’ concepts of oral health affect the way that they care for
themselves and what barriers exist to individuals accessing care and adopting
healthy behaviours.

The study will consider the populations of Redbridge,
Waltham Forest and Barking and Dagenham, and use patient concepts of oral
health to ask whether deprivation can explain why some individuals engage in
behaviours such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and irregular visits
to a dentist, which increase their risk of oral diseases.

It will assess the strengths and shortcomings of the way
oral health services are provided, providing evidence on how to adapt existing
structures and develop new services and interventions that overcome barriers to
care. It will also provide evidence to underpin models of commissioning care.

Professor Liz Kay, Chair of the Trustees of the Fund, said:

“Despite an overall improvement in the oral health of the UK
over the past four decades, a persistent and unacceptable chasm between those
with the best and worst oral health persists. Understanding why we have this
gap is crucial to addressing this situation. The trustees hope that this piece
of work can make a significant contribution to expanding that understanding and
helping to develop practical tools to address it.”

The project will be led by Dr Russ Ladwa, Dean of the
Faculty of General Dental Practice at the Royal College of Surgeons of England
in London. It will be hosted by Institute of Dentistry at Barts and The London
School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Thanking the trustees, Dr Ladwa said:

“The award of this grant represents a great boost to
research in primary care. The FGDP(UK) will work in collaboration with the host
institution, Barts and The London SMD, Queen Mary University of London, which
has a tradition of research in health inequalities. Both the Institutions are
delighted to be given the opportunity to carry out research that will provide
evidence to develop cost effective models of delivering prevention and
treatment in primary dental care.”

Our congratulations to all
involved and many thanks to all who voted for the topic and the panel of

The current voting round ended on 30 September 2010, and the question that was voted into the top spot was:

Smoking cessation counselling is an important and essential role for the dental professionals? Do we know the best practice, the current activity at GDP level and the barriers? Is it worth to introduce in GDP and ask for NHS finance? Are we ready to do it, do we have enough time to do it?

I just wanted to update you all on the voting on the website. We are currently in the middle of recruiting a new reviewer who will continue to carry out critical appraisals each month on the top voted for questions. We are very pleased to announce that these critical appraisals will continue through until July 2011.

We are hoping that our new reviewer will be in post by the end of July/ early August so this means that the current round of voting will be extended.

So guys, this is the ideal time to get your questions submitted and included in this extended round of voting!

So, get thinking about those questions which you would really like to see answered with some decent research.

We'll keep you updated as to the deadline for this round of voting.

All the best.

Thanks once again for getting involved!

Statement: Dentists' fear and clinical decision-making

Hi All,
